Episode Guide
The professor announces that the orphanarium has named Leela orphan of the year. He also reveals his latest invention – it is a machine that makes glow in the dark nose. Amy discovers all the toxic by-products coming out of the back and Hermes says that it has to be disposed of properly. The Professor hires Bender to do it.

Later Bender runs a big pipe and dumps all the toxic waste into the sewer. A mutant comes up and moans at Bender but everybody ignores her. At the ceremony the oprhanarium guy introduces it and remembers back to when Leela arrived and he found the note written in an alien language.

Leela begins to give speech while that guy pins the picture up on the wall. She continues to say how being an orphan made her strong and all the kids can make it on their own too – all the kids cheer and such. The news gets a picture of Leela and thay guy from the first alumni picture jumps into the background.

Later, back at Planet Express Fry finds Leela crying in the locker room. They go for a walk and Leela tells Fry that although she gave the speech but all she really wanted was to know her real parents. They look up and imagine Leela’s parents up there. The camera moves down to reveal two mutants looking up at them from the sewer.

Next day Bender turns up in a truck named “Honest Bender’s Waste Disposal.” Fry and Leela arrive to watch Bender dump the whale from Free Willie down a manhole and into the sewer. Bender gives a speech about how the sewer mutants cannot do anything as they are down in the sewer and he is up here. Then mutants appear and pull them into the sewer.

The mutants shows Bender how they have destroyed the mutagenic lake. They prepare to lower them into the lake as punishment, mutating them. They demon straight on a rat which comes out as a weird fish / pig type creature. They begin to power the three towards the sewer lake.

Two robed mutants turn up and call our Leela’s name then spin the crane saving them. The three land on the surface at the opposite side of the lake. The mutants jump in and give chase. They hide in a house and the mutants run past. However the house they are in has loads of Leela stuff.

The mutants return to find them and Bender and Fry prepare to run by Leela dithers. They are unable to move her and the mutants grab them. Outside that little leg mutant kicks Fry in the shin. They are going to be given the death penalty however the robed figures turn up and whisper something and the penalty is changed to being expelled.

An airship is brought to provide them with transportation to the surface. They are taken to a ladder where they can climb to the surface. Bender and Fry go out but Leela sees the robed figures and dives into the lake to go find them. When she gets out of the water she is surprised to find she has not mutated.

Leela finds the robed figures but they run away. Leela gives chase. Fry wants to find Leela and so goes to dig up dirt on her past. At the orphanarium Fry is given the note that was found with baby Leela, written in alienease. Fry takes the note back to Planet Express and asks the Professor to translate it.

Back in the sewer Leela is looking for the robed figures when Bender dumps a load of rubbish on her head as he continues his dumping business. At Planet Express the analysis is complete and Fry and the Professor read the print out. Fades back in time with the caption “20-something years ago, 100-something feet underground.”

It show’s Leela’s birth where the doctor says that she is the least-mutated mutant ever born. They aren’t happy about her having to live like a mutant so they come up to the surface and leave her at the oprhanarium. He dad pins the bracelet on her wrist and her mum gives her the alienease language to make people think she is an alien.

Back in current time Leela continues to chase them and catches them in a building where they are hiding. Leela points the guns at them and finds the bracelet just like hers. They confess to killing her parents and Leela is about to shoot them when Fry comes in and says that they are her parents.

He reveals that the analysis of the note shows it was printed on recycled toilet paper – used mainly in the sewer. They hug and it rains down as Bender pours water from a grate above. Flashbacks come on with music of Leela being helped out by her parents when she was a baby, studying as a kid, as a teenager and an adult. Goes to credits.
Quotes
Professor: “It’s a glow in the dark nose you can ware over your regular none glowing nose”

Hermes: “It looks like toxic waste. And it smells like toxic waste”
Fry: “What does it taste like?”
Hermes: “Delicious fig pudding. Ooo, that’s good. But a distinct aftertaste of toxic waste”

Professor: “So the machine makes a few toxic by-products. You don’t have to make a federal case out of it”
Hermes: “I’m afraid I do. I order you to dispose of this waste properly or bribe me. Either way it will cost you $500”

Leela: “I don’t know if they were mighty alien overlords or simply alien janitors who fought crime in the side”

Fry: “Is it this room that’s making you sad? It’s probably the room”

Fry: “Yoh, you Bez-ender. What’s up?”

Bender: “Wait, I don’t even have DNA, why am I screaming?”
Mutant: “We’re going to beat you afterwards”

Leela: “It’s like some kind of weird Leela museum. And I’m the Leela!”

Squid: “Worked for me. I used to be a little blonde girl named Virginia”

Mutant: “Stop right there. I don’t want to hurt you”
Leela knocks him down
Mutant: “I didn’t want you to hurt me either”

Fry: “Can you translate it?”
Professor: “Of course. But only into Beta Crypt 3. A language so complex there is even less chance of understanding”
Fry: “I didn’t ask you to give me a completely reasonable excuse, I asked you to get busy”

Fry: “Isn’t that the same machine that makes noses”
Professor: “It can do other things, why shouldn’t it?”

Professor: “Oh course even if it can be translated there is no way to know how long it will take. It could take an hour or it could take a hundred million years.”
(ding)
Fry: “Is it done?”
Professor: “Certainly not. Two ding’s means it done”
(ding, ding)
Professor: “But not like that, slightly more rapid)
(ding, ding)
Fry looks expectedly but the Professor shakes his head

Doctor: “In my professional opinion, as an ear, ear, ear, nose and throat doctor”

Leela: “Am I game to you? Or some kind of even more boring Truman show?”
Analysis
You know what’s interesting. The Professor has a machine to make glow in the dark noses and analyse notes written in pretty much any language – and yet it’s built in printer is a Dot Matrix :D. That’s why Futurama is so good, it has these little nerd jokes.

Also one thing about her bracelet – it fits her fine when she is fully grown up but when it is first pinned on her when she is a baby it seems the right size too. Does it like adjust or what? It seems so much smaller when she is a baby.
Notes
The text at the start of the episode is “It’s like ‘Hee Haw’ with lasters”

The captions below the pictures of the other alumni are:

“Often seen in the background of news spots”
“Diligent flosser”
“Has tasted every McDonald’s sandwich”
“Successfully switched from heroin to methadone”

The patchwork airship features:
# Underdog’s groin
# Bart Simpson’s left ear and right shin
# Garfield’s owner John’s forehead

The song used at the end is Baby Love Child by Pizzicato Five.
