Seth coolly prepares to throw s stake – and misses. Xander points out Willow’s interesting choice of words.

They discuss school starting tomorrow and decide to head home. Willow wishes Buffy would return. Out on the sea front Buffy is walking along the beach, Angel has his hands around her. They share a moment before Buffy wakes up and looks out the window at the street below.

Roll opening title. Next day Buffy is working at a café. Her nametag has a name ‘Anne’ on it. She sees a couple who have little money due to their tattoos. They show Buffy it – one says Rickie the other says Lily. Lily questions if she knows Buffy. Buffy says she isn’t feeling well and leaves.

Back at the library Willow talks to Giles before talking to Cordelia. She asks about Xander she seems to be obsessing over him. Oz turns up at school and tells Willow that he didn’t go to summer school so didn’t graduate. They talks as they head off but Xander interrupts them asking about Cordelia.

The jocks discuss how this could be the best football team ever if they have less mysterious death. Cordelia and Xander meet but their conversation does not go so smoothly. Later Buffy is walking down the street and sees someone helping out a homeless guy. Another homeless women repeats “I’m no one.”

Giles comes off the phone and says he has a lead in Oakland and says he is flying out but Xander says chances are it isn’t going to lead anywhere. Lily appears and shouts after Buffy. Buffy finally responds when she uses the name Buffy rather than Anne. Lily says she used to be in a cult in Sunnydale until Buffy saved them.

Lily invites Buffy to a rave but Buffy says she wants to be alone. A homeless man pushes between them and walks out in the middle of the room and stands in front of a car. Buffy rushes out and pushes him out of the way but she gets hit. They crowd round but Buffy says she is fine and rushes off. Round the corner she bumps into someone. He introduces himself as Ken and gives her a leaflet.

Ken talks about how kids come here when they got nothing else and how it shouldn’t be that way. There are pictures of kids begging for money on the street which fades to the Bronze. Xander, Willow and Seth talk about how all the vampires are getting anyway and Xander, eyeing up Cordelia suggests they use bait.

Giles shows up to see Joyce and tells her the lead was a bunch of kids. Joyce is worried but Giles says she is capable of looking after herself and mustn’t blame herself. However Joyce says she doesn’t blame herself – she blames him. Lily comes into the café to speak to Anne and tells them that Rickie has disappeared.

Buffy eventually agrees to help Lily and they go to the blood bank. They decide to split up and meet up later at Buffy’s place. The nurse at the blood bank seems to know something but doesn’t say anything. Buffy arrives at a one of their haunts and finds Rickie lying next to a bleach bottle – but he is really old.

Buffy arrives back to find Lily and tells her that he is dead (and 80 years old). Lily suggests that Buffy brought this with her and leaves. Outside Ken talks to Lily and says that Rickie is with them now. That night Buffy breaks into the blood band and finds the comment “candidate” on Rickie’s files. The nurse admits she gives the name to Ken.

Meanwhile Ken leads Lily towards the process of cleansing. Back in Sunnydale the 4 prepare to go vampire hunting. Xander and Cordelia get in a flight while a vampire sneaks up on Willow. Ken takes Lily to a murky pool while in the outer offices Buffy comes in and asks to be let in however she decides just to fight her way in. In the pool Buffy bursts in and questions Ken. Lily is sucked into the pool. Ken grabs her and they dive in two.

Buffy finds herself on her back after falling through into a corridor. Ken moans about how his face has come off – he reveals the demon within him. Buffy and Lily run off and find a giant steal workings type cavern where slaves work under the command of demons. The two are caught.

Cordelia and Xander continue to fight while the vampire grabs Willow. Seth drags him off and Xander goes to stake him. He manages to and he and Cordelia start making out on the ground. Buffy comes to and finds herself in a cell. Lily thinks she is in hell and Ken arrives to break down their spirits. Ken points out that time moves faster here – 100 years down here takes only a day on Earth.

Later they are taken to training so their spirits can be broken. They go alone the line getting people to admit they are no one. However Buffy introduces herself and starts demon ass kicking. Lily tells Buffy to get the people out when she takes on the demons. The alarm sounds as Buffy runs through the place.

Ken arrives and is annoyed someone is fighting back. Buffy continues to kick ass and Ken heads off somewhere. He captures Lily as she runs for it. Ken decides to kill Buffy to make en example of her but Lily pushes him off the ledge and he Buffy continues to fight again. Buffy arrives to help the others and lifts the gate. Ken comes while Buffy is holding the gate but it falls on him and impales his legs.

Buffy and Lily climb up out of the whole and it seals over with sheet metal. Buffy offers Lily her place and her job. Lily is worried about taking care of herself but Buffy reassures her. Lily asks if she can be Anne. Back at home, Joyce gets a knock at the door. It is Buffy, they hug and it cuts to credits.

Buffy: “It’s nice. Nice and permanent”

Willow: “We try not to get killed. That’s part of our whole mission statement. Don’t get killed”

Xander: “What makes this different from the last 9 leads?”

Lily: “Can I come with you?”

Ken: “Rickie’s no more dead then I am”

Nurse: “What are you doing?”
Buffy: “Breaking into your office and going through your private files”
Analysis
While it is true that Rickie probably isn’t any more dead then Ken is that doesn’t help much Ken being a demon and therefore classed as dead and all.
Notes
Buffy uses the name Anne as it is her middle name.
